Alenco Home Improvement, headquartered in Lenexa, Kansas, has been selected to participate in a newly created in-store home improvement concept within the nationally recognized Wal-Mart stores. Alenco has been offered the opportunity to open home improvement design centers at select Wal-Mart stores throughout the metro. The program will begin with the Wal-Mart store in Olathe, Kansas by mid-May 2013.

“We’ve known for a long time that Wal-Mart could become a great partner in offering home improvement services to their customers. We are very excited for the opportunity and honored they chose Alenco to roll the program out,” says General Manager, Abe Eller.

The in-store design center will give Alenco the opportunity to showcase all their products such as replacement windows, siding, sunrooms, kitchens and more. The hours of the store will be most days from 10am to 8pm. There will be an Alenco representative in the store to present products, answer questions, and direct customers in the proper direction.

This program shows that the Kansas City area is a real community driven place to do business. It’s not often that you see a larger corporation partnering with a local small business. It shows how much the Kansas City area has grown and why it’s considered one of the best places to operate a business.

About Alenco Home Improvement
Alenco’s history began way back in 1986 in Olathe, Kansas. That is part of why this local partnership is so significant. Alenco’s mindset from the beginning was to deliver the finest in Kansas City home improvement and beyond through quality services. Through those successes, Alenco has grown to become one of the largest most diverse home improvement companies in the Kansas City area. Alenco continues to initiate solid partnerships with local companies because they understand the importance of being in front of customers on a consistent basis.

The home improvement industry was introduced post World War II. Returning soldiers needed housing and needed it quick. Developers excitedly stood by ready to help. Thus, the need for home maintenance and supplies rapidly grew which quickly lead to the home improvement industry. But what started out as a “must have” in terms of home improvement or home maintenance grew to a worldwide hobby…or even sport. There are websites created specifically around home improvement. People write blogs about the “10 best tips to home improvement.” There are magazines, trade shows, radio shows and even television shows with “experts” on home improvement. But are we blinded by the business? Are we blinded by who looks the best for TV? Who writes the best for the Average Joe Home Improvement blog? (not an actual blog) The answer…yes! If you were to research the so-called stars of television, you will find a large percent have never even picked up a hammer. A lot of them read scripts or study what project it is the night before so they can on stage and be an expert. Don’t misunderstand, there are several experts on television that are very reputable. But before you watch, it’s advised that you do your research to see how credible the source of information is. But more importantly, you should do your research on what home improvement company you may select to actually work on your home. Alenco Home Improvement is one of Kansas City’s largest and most reputable home improvement company’s. Not long ago, Alenco conducted a survey asking customers what they looked for in a home improvement company prior to their selection. Here is what Alenco found: length of time in business, better business bureau report (I’ll save this for another day), insurance, who started the company, who runs the company, logistics of implementation, customer testimonials, job samples…and a few more. Alenco home improvement is a REAL home improvement company specializing in replacement windows in the Kansas City area. You do your research on them, and you will see for yourself. Don’t be blinded by a fancy website, cool truck, or pretty face. Open your eyes to the quality of the company and the workmanship.

Dated: Apr. 11, 2013
We live in a world of social media. Who has the most “likes”? Did you post that on Facebook? Did you
read that Tweet the other day? Social media is perfect for getting information to the masses and getting it to
them quick. But in many business owners’ opinion, there is still no real proof on what it has done for their
business. Alenco, one of Kansas City’s largest home improvement companies specializing in replacement
windows, keeps their focus on building solid partnerships and relationships within the community. “It may
be an older way of doing business, but forming real relationships is what has built Alenco…so that’s what
we will continue to do” says Owner/President Allen Erskine. Alenco is a high end home improvement
business with a large portion of their business being replacement windows in the Kansas City area. Alenco
has found that by forming relationships with such business like local hardware stores and local grocery
stores, they are able to be in front of home owners and form that bond face to face. Alenco realizes that
they may not have a real grasp on what social media can do for them, but they also understand that when it
comes to servicing one’s home…you want to look beyond the social media world to understand who the
company is and what their values are. Abe Eller, General Manager, says it best: “We want to be able to tell
homeowners our story; we are a local, family operated company that treats customers like family. And we
stand behind everything we do.” And according to the staff at Alenco, there is no other way to express true
passion…than face-to-face.
— End —

Many folks ask about the value of inert gases being injected into the seal space between panes of glass in window and door products. The easiest way I have found to explain the value of such gases is simple: Visualize that area being filled with fiberglass insulation. The insulation provides a barrier from the temperature outside and what your HVAC system is trying to do on the inside.

Since these gases are clear and not noticeable to the naked eye it is very important that you know exactly what type of gas, if any is contained in the window or door product. The different gases have varied levels of performance. Argon gas is the most common inert gas used in window and door products. To illustrate the difference in performance lets compare Argon gas to Krypton gas, a scarce gas used in less than 1% of all window and door products. Krypton gas provides a R value (resistance value to heat and cold) of 9 whereas Argon gas would provide an R value of 4. Making Krypton over twice as effective as Argon gas. So in conclusion make sure you know about the type of gas in the products you purchase. Remember it’s what you “Don’t See” that makes the difference.

The amazing heat that has plagued the Kansas City Area this summer has left homeowners grasping for solutions on home energy savings. Below we will list some ideas that may help you in controlling the rising cost of heating and cooling your home.

1. SEAL! SEAL! SEAL! Make sure that your home is not allowing outside air to enter or vice/versa heating and cooling out. seal or caulk all window and door openings. Check performance and tightness of all windows and doors. Repair or replace as needed. Seal foundation plate.

2. INSULATE/UPGRADE. Check insulation in attic and sidewalls to determine if the amounts and types are adequate. Research through internet or local contractors to determine what new insulation types are available. This is an area where you don’t want cut corners as new technology could save you $$$$.

3. Inspect heating and cooling systems to see iF they are performing properly. HVAC Systems have changed dramatically over the years. An investment in this area could pay dividends.

4. Adjust your thermostat 2 or 3 degrees cooler in the winter and 2 or 3 degrees warmer in the summer. The use of throw blankets and fans can help with the change. A free way to lower your bill.

5. Turn off lights in rooms when not in use. Places like bathrooms, kitchens, and roms you go in and out of should stay dark when not being used.

The ideas above are a few examples of ways to fight off high utility bills. Call Alenco to get help should you need any help energy saving products we offer. As always our advice and pricing is free.

Spring is almost here and now is the time to start checking your windows for problems that could have occurred over the winter months. For the past few years, I make it priority after every winter to evaluate the status of not only my windows but my whole house. This is a great way to proactively maintain your home and help avoid massive home improvement headaches in the future. Here is a 3 point checklist that you can use to asses your windows in your home:

1. Caulking- Check the caulking around the outside of your windows to see if it is beginning to crack or peel. Caulking is very important because it waterproofs the seams of your windows and prevents them from rotting . If caulking failure is caught early enough it is relatively easy and cheap to fix the problem.

2. Wood Rot- This is a major problem with wood windows(obviously) as they come in contact with the elements over time. Wood rot usually starts to appear on the sill of the window where water has a tendency to get into crack and seams. If you notice the decay of wood around windows you should call a window specialist to look at your them and see if it’s structurally integrity has been effected. If not caught early enough, replacing your windows will be your only option.

3. Drafty- A drafty window can be a result of a few different problems such as: caulking failure, home settling, and even failure of the window. If you noticed a drafty window over the winter months, here are a few ways you can evaluate the problem. Started by checking to see if your windows open, close and lock properly, and then check to see when the window is closed completely if there is a gap between the window sill and the sash. If you have older windows, a draft could be a result of improper balancing. Depending on situation buying new windows isn’t always the only option but you should have a window specialist asses the problem. If the problem is occur where the sash and sill meet, one option is buying weather stripping and adding to your window where needed. If your are having problems where the top and bottom sash meet you can add a second lock to properly keep each sash tight. If your attempt to fix the problem and still have issues with your window, you should consider buying replacement windows. A drafty window can take a chunk out of your wallet if left touched, so don’t leave this problem unfixed.

So I will try and make this as painless a possible. When describing solid materials you can categorize them four ways; metal, ceramic, composite and polymer. What separates polymers from other solid materials is its carbon atom formation and its molecular structure that is long and chain-like. There are two subcategories of polymer; synthetic and natural. Natural polymers include materials like leather, wood, and paper. Synthetic polymers were developed in the late 1920 and consist of products like plastics, rubber and adhesives. Scientist developed synthetic polymers after studying natural polymers and their compounds. Synthetic material have grow widely popular in all industry and proven to be very useful. Polymer products have reshape the home improvement industry by replacing wood products(natural polymer) with synthetic polymer materials like vinyl and fiberglass. Siding manufactures started adapting to this new technology in the late 1950s with the invention of vinyl siding for the home. Today Synthetic Polymer Siding is the most widely used type of siding and it continues to change as new technology and innovations help increase its durability and strength. No longer are we dependent on wood products to protect the exterior of the home. Synthetic polymer products have the ability to withstand water and will add year of life to your home. Purchasing siding can be a very big decision, make sure you do your research to find the best option for your home.
